16. dagar til jóla – Jólakerti

Í desember er sólargangur stystur og myrkrið því mikið. Sérhvert ljós var því kærkomið og dýrmætt. Kerti voru ekki jafn sjálfsagður hlutur og í dag en snemma á 19. öld var það orðinn almennur siður að gefa heimilisfólki kerti á jólunum. Þau voru þá jafnan heimagerð. Yfir jólin var starað á ljósið frá loganum þar til það slokknaði en stundum voru kertin svo falleg að á þeim var ekki kveikt. In December darkness is all-encompassing and light precious. Candles were commonly homemade till the first decades of the 20th century. In the previous century it became common to give each member of the household a candle as a Christmas gift. People would often spend Christmas day just staring at the lights but when the candles were too precious they were kept as decorations.
